This Dark is a collection of haiku by Tofino author, Joanna Streetly. The 28 haiku are inspired by the west coast of Vancouver Island and are paired with original linocuts by Tofino artist, Marion Syme.
Streetly likens her motivation to write in haiku – a form of poetry with three unrhymed lines, usually with 5, 7, and 5 syllables – as being similar to taking a photograph. “When I write haiku, I have the strong urge to represent a moment — perhaps just light hitting a tree or whatever catches my attention — that begs to be held close and not lost. The constraint of the form means that I must hone in on an idea or observation, focusing on a single thread.”
This Dark is printed on 100 percent post-consumer paper with original linocuts by artist, Marion Syme.
